And The Winners Are....

Hello BoC,
Here is the much anticipated list of award winners as nominated by your teammates. I have to say it’s been a great learning season where each person’s contributions were eminent in the team’s success. Our Best Bid category proves that point as there were eight nominations. Cheers to everyone on BoC 2007, thank you for another wonderful season and I look forward others.

And the winners are…

Most Improved Player:
Though she was forcefully dragged out to one of BoC’s games by Rhea after our roster of girls depleted to three, Danielle Richards brought with her a light but extremely practical tool box. Over the course of the short summer season, she added new tools and significantly refined the ones she had. The in cuts, reading the disc in the end zone, anticipating discs going over taller players who jump too early, the perfectly timed dump throws, and those bids!! A BIG THANK YOU for being so consistent with your attendance YAY subs!! Congrats Danielle!!

Most Chilly Player:
Back again for more BoC antics, our Sam Tran showed us why our handlers are to be respected. Short people know where to hide, and are so damn speedy! Sam’s specialty: the quick, low released, but controlled give and go, super deadly to those tall players who end up tripping all over themselves. Congrats Sam!!

Most Spirited Player:
Our gentle giant Daniel Kupisz brought with him not only BoC’s height, but spirit. Not the Eric “Come on guys the sun is eating up our light!” spirit..err...intensity, but the kind that consistently reminds us to chill out, calm the fuck down, lets play smart and just have some fun. It’s been a pleasure having you on the team. Congrats Dan!!

Best Bid:
Whoever said you can’t baseball slide to catch a disc has never seen Rhea Jankowski in action. Though I really can’t remember it being a successful catch; I remember the slide, your feet tipping the disc up towards your hands and….and….no dice. 
BUT the Rhea bids are not always about the slide, it’s the jumping up for a disc in the end zone fighting off a bunch of boys who think that they are taller and then schooling them with her reach. I ♥ Rhea and her wing cravings every Monday!! Congrats!!

…and our 2007 Most Valuable Player:
Mike Jones…really do I need to say more? 
Thank you Mike for stepping up when the captains fall short, for your knowledge and commitment to the team, and for letting us raid your kitchen, patio, pool, hot tub, BBQ, etc. Always a pleasure sharing a field with you and from the nominations, your teammates share that appreciation as well. Congratulations Mike!!

Thank you Breakfast of Champions, keep up the good work and I look forward to sharing the field with you all in the future!!

Cheers,
B.

Aphorisms To Play By

(As told by the boys of Queen's Mothership)
Eric's gonna freak when he reads this :) Yes, I've stolen this off of the Queen's site and I've only stolen it because it's a good read and it has good points. So enjoy!

1. Play Fast; Never Hurry
Moving quickly is good, but something always goes wrong when you try
to move faster than you are able. If you try to throw too fast, your
throw will blade. If you try to turn too fast, you'll slip. If you
try to throw before you've finished catching, you'll drop. These are
the most common mistakes among intermediate players. Intermediate
players know how to do all three of these things, but they fail when
they forget to give each manoeuvre its due attention. Everything
should feel relaxed and natural, like Jet Li calmly disassembling his
enemy.

2. Intense, but Controlled
You must want the disc and you must want to score, but you must temper
drive with calm awareness. When the defensive bid is there, go for it;
when it isn't, cut off the break/swing pass. When you lose possession,
get on defense. When you make an awesome layout grab, don't throw
away the disc. Don't throw to a mediocre cut just because it is there.
Remember to dump at stall 5.

3. On Defense, Anticipate
Know what options are available to your opponent. Someone in the
endzone wants to cut in. Someone who has run in wants to run out.
Someone who has run out wants to run in.

4. On Offense, Create Opportunity
If you can't get the disc yourself, you might be able to make space for
someone to cut into. If someone else has run to occupy one opportunity
(e.g. deep), run to occupy the complementary opportunity (e.g. short).
Clear the lanes; take what they give you; throw what they give you.

5. On Defense, Take Away Opportunity
Help your teammates by recognizing what your opponents want. If you
are in a position to do so, flash the forceside lane momentarily. Call
switches when your mark and someone else's are moving in opposite
directions. Cut off the continuation pass. Always chase a huck, no
matter what your mark does.

6. On Offense, Misdirect Your Mark
Speed up before you turn. Cut behind your mark's back. Fake a throw
convincingly. Make a boulder-cut. Become unpredictable and demand
your mark's full attention.

7. On Defense, Follow Your Mark, but Don't Chase
A defender must choose an area of denial, and stand between his mark
and that area. He must choose a buffer zone between himself and his
mark. These two things he must keep constant, regardless of what his
mark chooses to do. Never let the buffer shorten or lengthen. If he
cuts toward you, maintain your area of denial; if he cuts away,
maintain your area of denial. When your mark cuts away from you,
pursue, but do not try to close your buffer zone-- this is called
"chasing," and he will change directions as soon as you try to catch
up. Listen for the "up" call, and then forget about your mark; play
the disc now instead.

Back to Basics

Dear BoC,
It's easy to whip out hammers and make up line cross field cuts into end zones when you're dominating a low level team. But when facing teams that are at par with our skills and physical endurance, playing smart and being efficient is the only way to differentiate a good team from a winning one.

Last Monday loss was a clear example of what we are still lacking in executing basic defense and offense, but mostly defense. For those will be in town this Monday Eric and I will be going through a few drills on the fundamentals of Ultimate. I hope the drill we did after last Monday's game has helped us understand more about the following:

THREE GOLDEN RULES OF DEFENSE
  • Don't get broken. WHY?
  • Your team-mates are relying on you as the mark, to hold the force. When you are letting easy passes through, your team-mates are caught on the wrong side of their mark. Consequently free passes on the broken side and into the end zone. If you do get broken yell "BROKEN" so that your team-mates can adjust to continue to contain the disc and hold the force.

  • Don't get beat force side. WHY?
  • Whoever is marking the disc is relying on their team-mates to get the D on the force side. Holding a force can only work if the running offense is contained as well. If you are on the correct side of the offense, it should be hard for them to get the disc. ALWAYS STAY BETWEEN THE DISC AND YOUR MARK.

  • Don't get beat up line. WHY?
  • From our drill Monday night, we recognized how easy it has been for the offense to beat us on the up line. We also tend to bid too far and end up on the wrong side of the force. Needless to say, we have to learn to contain the cuts, and help out our team-mates with "no up lines, and dumps" calls. QUADRANT DEFENSE WORKS! If you have to, let them dump, and make sure you're right on the mark (on the correct side of course) to prevent the swing.

I think most of us have a feel for how the game is suppose to look on paper when we draw our lil x's and o's. But when it comes down to playing it on the field, we become lost in the chaos.

Please let me know if you are out of town this weekend. Eric & I will try to hold the fort and recruit a few subs so we can play Monday.

    Thanks!
    ~B

Yay! We got our juniors back!!!

BoC!! Great work for a 17-6 win!
Good job ladies sticking it out on iron women. It's definitely good news coming home to an email about getting our junior girls back. We should have @ least 2 lines of girls next week!! WOHOOO!!! For the most part, we're slowly getting a hang of each other and we were able to work off of that last night.

    What we worked on:
  • Horizontal (HO) Stack
  • This worked when we recognized what our team mates were doing. Partners working the lanes cutting in opposite directions etc. There were a few times where partners were cutting each other off but that was corrected and it was great.

  • Transitioning to Vertical Stack
  • Last night we transitioned well from defense to offense quickly and setting up the horizontal stack. That same note, it was awesome to see us move from a horizontal stack, play man defense on a turn, and reset a vertical stack on a turn.

  • End zone and setting up Sub Zero In general we seem to forget what to do when we get into the end zone. Let's set this as our default end zone play. It worked last night and it gave us options. We'll refine it as the season progress. Otherwise, it was a good first trial.

  • Setting a zone offense
  • Our Iso-German play was awesome. Great cuts Les, and good movement ladies. We'll use this in the future to help us unclog the field and free up some green space.

  • Punishing the poaches
  • All I gotta say is Rhea skying the dude in the end zone. That was soooo pretty...and I'm sure we lost some spirit points laughing at the dude but it was just too sweet not to laugh :)

  • Straight up mark...
  • This worked for us last night, but it needs to be refined. The key to this mark is to prevent the hucks. Though some of the hucks that were let out were wonky, there were a few that got down the field.

  • ...and preventing the in cuts
  • With a straight up mark, the in cuts are the biggest threat. We have to make sure we are covering the in's. That means covering ALL inside cuts; both home and away side. This will be reviewed for our next game.

    Overall, good work everyone!!
    ~B

P.S. Lets do Hollywood Gelato next time...Les, Dan....oh that was such a good call ;)

What to Bring:yellow and a black jersey, water, cleats, etc. Let's tryout get to the fields around 6:15ish so we can run some drills. We were a bit sluggish starting our game last night and its probably because we weren't properly warmed up.

I will send out the Breakfast of Champion's PowerPoint play book tonight. Please message me or Eric if there are questions or concerns regarding the PowerPoint. Also note, due to game sensitive material in the PowerPoint, it is for team use only and we trust that it will not be distributed to anyone who is not on the team.

    Burgers, Beer & Wings Night

    Dearest BoC,
Good game last night everyone & great first game for Guido and Sandy. Though it wasn't one of our tougher games, it definitely allowed us to be creative. That said, our offense and zone defense desperately needs some fine tuning and cleaning up.

So, after our game next week, Mike & Stephanie has graciously provided their home for our use. For those who are new, we will be going over Eric's PowerPoint from last year and I'd like most of the team, if not everyone to participate.

Please bring $5 to help cover food & drinks costs.
Psst...I hear Rhea's bring Crystal Lite, and Grape Kool-Aid. And Allan? Life brand ibuprofen? :)

    Cheers!!

    Congrats BoC!

Congrats boys and girls on your first win. Thanks to the 4 boys and 4 girls who showed up to play last night. Much appreciated and give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done.

Quick Recap for those who couldn't make it:
We started the game 30 minutes late as the traffic on the 401 was a mess last night. The Krabs started counting points @ 7pm (TUC rules: Award 1 point every 5 minutes to the team who is ready to play at start time.) and they were up by 3 by the time we put 5 players on the field. Once we got a full line on (the men played iron man) we worked out our kinks, worked out our trouble with forcing confusions, and played hard man to secure half and our 16-10 win.

Yay to our one person sideline help, to Derek and his layout catch into the ravine, Danielle for joining our team, Allan for correcting his forces, Stephanie for her hot puts, and Rhea for her beautiful cuts that Mike looked off, not to mention cut off :P
And oh right....Congrats Eric on baiting for a layout Callahan...

Great work boys and girls! You guys deserved the W.
    Congrats!

    Game One Recap

For those who made it out to game #1 give yourself a pat on the back. We had a total of 4 boys and 5 girls and lost 14-12 only because a couple of boys cramped out of the game; props to the ladies for steppin’ it up and playing defense against the men. I think it’s time to get in shape!! Do I hear more squats??!

Big Thank Yous to Deanna for subbing on such short notice, great D’s and that WICKED pass into the end zone to Cecile!! And to Rhea for bringing Cecile!! :D

We have a few changes in our roster as Jamie and Jillyan will no longer be playing with us. Please welcome Cecile, who has been voluntold/peer pressured onto the team and Sandy has also stepped up to the pitch. We’ll see how the next game goes to see if there will be other roster adjustments.

THINGS TO IMPROVE ON OUR NEXT OUTING:
  • Fitness: We shouldn’t be cramping out if we’re properly warmed up even if our fitness level isn’t all that great. Let’s make sure we are properly hydrated and have eaten before a game. If that is not possible then lets try to bring some bananas and apples to the field. Granola bars help too.

  • Setting cuts: We are in a relatively low pool, and by setting our cuts, we are not only able to out run our defenders for a pass, but we’ll be efficient in doing so, therefore conserving energy. Let’s make it easy for ourselves.

  • Recognize forces, keeping the force: The team this week was often on the wrong side of their defender. Let’s learn to recognize the mistakes. That being said, a few of us were on the wrong side of our mark as well. Make sure you are between your defender and the disc at ALL times.

  • General Flow: This will come as we play together as a team. Learning each other’s speed, adjusting speed of throws, watching cuts, mirror cuts, less clogging etc.

  • I will post the next game details once it’s up. Please post on the comment box whether or not you will be at the game. I’d like to know numbers so I can prep for savage games.

Is there any interest in meeting up on non game nights just to do a few drills and some tossing? For those who are new to the game, it would definitely help on your throws, and general understanding of the game.

Let me know what days are good for you.

    Thanks, much appreciated.

    Hey All,
A few important things on this update.
    (From my previous email)
A good friend's league team wants to hook up tomorrow and has asked if we wanted to play some pick up. Anyone interested? Sometime after work/school either at Riverdale East or Sunnybrook park. It'd also be good for us to meet each other and get some of the team together as some of you will be out of town.
Let me know by tonight (Monday) or early tomorrow (Tuesday morning).

Also, our first game is on Monday May 21 aka Victoria Day. If you cannot make this game please let me know now...Otherwise, I will expect to see everyone on the field monday night. Please update your status to "regular player" if you haven't already done so on TUC.

    WELCOME BoC SUMMER 2007

SUMMER LEAGUE BEGINS MAY 21 (Victoria Day)

    Welcome Breakfast of Champions!!
Spring is upon us and the antsy pantsy Ultimate itch is upon us. I am excited about league this summer and am pleased with the abundance of interest to play with BoC. For those who are new to the team, this is our blog for virtually everything, and anything. Postings for game schedules, car rides, pre/post game chats, ribs & wings night, etc. If you’re curious, feel free to surf last years postings, photos, and random chit chat.

    Who Are We?
Breakfast of Champions was built last year by a few friends who felt that competitive touring on the weekends and practices twice a week wasn’t enough Ultimate. Over a couple of Starbucks Java chip Mocha Frappucinos® they decided to build a team with the purpose of exposing novice players to an intermediate level of Ultimate; in game and in culture.

    What Should You Expect?
Breakfast of Champions is primarily built for LEARNING, IMPROVING ON SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF PLAY BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A TEAM. It's also a team that keen on having a good time. What about winning games you ask? We strongly believe that when we build on basics and have a solid grasp on the fundamentals of the game, winning will come. It’s just the nature of the game.

We are going to start the season starting from the beginning. We will be working on our throws, our cuts, our stacks, clearing, and our communication. Once we have everyone on the same page, it is guaranteed that we will add some spice to everyone’s toolbox. You can EXPECT to be a better player by the end of the summer.

    What Do We Expect?
Because all of you have already played some level of ultimate in the past, I will expect improvement and a relatively steep learning curve as the team gels, and as the season progress. Last season, we started in tier 8; we came in 2nd in tier 8, 1st in tier 7 and ended the season in tier 6. Depending on the number of teams, I’d like to start in tier 7 and see where we go from there. I expect everyone to be playing with lots of spirit, to be playing hard and doing your absolute best at all times.

    Your 2007 Leadership Squad

Bonnie Lee no. 9 Eric Lau no. 2

Individually, we've been playing Ultimate for at least five seasons and have played for teams of various calibers. In recent years, we’ve toured competitively to various tournaments in Ontario, Quebec and the States. We attended Nationals in Halifax last summer with our respective teams and am extremely excited and eager to compete again, as this year's Canadian Ultimate Championships will be held in Toronto.

Ultimate has taken a hold a big part in our lives, and it has always been good times when we’re out on the pitch. Hopefully, we can share not only our passion and knowledge of the game with you, but also a new and exciting experience this summer season.

    Game Notes: Vertical Stack
  • Cut from the back of the stack. Meaning first cut comes from the back of the stack.

  • Second from the last person in the stack, mirror cuts the first cutter and cuts in the opposite direction of the first cut. So if the first cutter cuts open side, the second cutter cuts break side and so on.

  • When clearing, restack behind the 3rd handler who will ALWAYS be the first person in the stack.

  • 3rd handler sits in the front of the stack at all times. This handler cuts for the swing/bail, NOT the first throw.

  • Two handlers back @ ALL times. One to handle the disc, one for the bail. The two handlers sitting back should never leave any player stranded by running up field, unless switches are made with another handler to stay behind.

  • Handlers will DUMP @ stall 4. Cutters keep count in your head so that you can time the cut off of the 3rd handler.

  • Lets keep it organized and have a clean stack. Handlers chilly it out, slow it down, trust in your teammates and have fun!!

This team is the opposite of last weeks team where the men are stronger than the ladies. I'd like to again focus on endzone plays, and using the opportunity to switch up handlers and cutters to our advantage. We'll work the buddy system again, partners will be decided at the game.
    Let's rip it up :)

Yay!! 8:30pm game!! Last game, we came out strong and for the first half, kept up with a very experienced and fast team. WOHOO!! We got our horizontal stack going, and had some good cuts. Great work!!

Things to keep in mind this week:
  • Don't leave team-mates stranded

  • Remember and keep the force

  • Sideline help

  • Let's bring the same attitude and spirit from the last game to this one!!
    See y'all on the field!!

    Game One Recap

    Dearest Team,
Good game last night even though it was crazy cold. Hopefully by next week we'll get some heat in the dome. Just wanted to do some housekeeping and things to think about for our next game. The score last night was 23-17; not too shabby @ all especially since some of us haven't played since the end of summer, and as a team we're still trying to gel.

For our next game we're going to look out for and review:
    1. Horizontal Stacking
  • Use our own lanes; that means clearing out using those same lines

  • Pairing up to cut. Work as a team, not as individuals

  • Use the dumps...Look for dump @ stall 4!!

  • Use the swings

  • Always have 2 handlers back

  • Handlers don't leave team-mates stranded!!

  • 2. NO POACHING
  • I have nothing against smart poaching, but last game we gave them lots of freebies on the in cuts, on the out cuts, on the dumps, on the swings, on the breaksides...This cannot happen! If you're tired, we have plenty of subs. Keep yourself fresh.

  • 3. Keeping the force
  • Something we learned lots about in the summer and what Eric and I stressed about. Same deal in indoor...remember the force called on the line...make sure you're on the correct side of your mark & cutter.

    a) Don't get broken.
Your team-mates are relying on you, the mark, to hold the force
    b) Don't get beat force side.
Whoever is marking the disc is relying on their team-mate to get the D on the force side. (stay between the disc and your mark)
    c) Don't get beat up line.
Let them have the dump rather than the up-line catch. If you have to, let them dump, and prevent the swing

  • If there are any questions, please ask. We have veteran ladies on the team and they are more than happy to give tips and feedback. Let me know if I missed anything :)
